ArtActiv & Suffolk Cabins
Thank you for taking the trouble to find this page and read a little about who we are.
ArtActiv came into being in 2009 as a provider of art workshops to young people between the ages of 8 -18 under the auspices of Suffolk County Council’s aiming high programme for children and young people who have special needs. After a year or two of a nomadic existence we finally settled on Thornham in March 2011 as a base for our Saturday workshops.
The workshops wound up at the end of 2014 when funding dried up, but the building which had been in a very poor state when we took it on had been repaired and was ready to rock and roll. So here we are having morphed from workshop to a place that is a welcoming retreat from our rather mad world. This change gave rise to the name Suffolk Cabins as it better describes us, although the company name remains unchanged.
We offer simple but comfortable accommodation in a Norwegian lodge facing northeast onto a large paddock of approximately 1400 m2, in good weather this area is a sheltered suntrap. The other aspect faces on to a small copse of mature trees which shelter various species of birds and other wildlife.
The cabins are located in Thornham Magna a pretty village on the edge of the Thornham Estate in the heart of Suffolk, close to the start point for the Thornham Walks. The estate itself covers some 2000 acres criss-crossed by twelve miles of managed walks running through beautiful woodland, interspersed with openings onto wonderful views across the Suffolk countryside. The cabins sit close to the start point for the Thornham Walks, creating the tranquillity so many of our visitors comment upon.
Suffolk Cabins has proved to be popular with groups of all kinds and we have been very lucky to host several different youth groups including the Prince’s Trust who stayed for a while last summer. Schools both local and from as far away as Holland and France have found this a great destination as it is well situated for exploring East Anglia.
On a different note altogether the tranquillity of the location, surrounded by mature trees and hedging, which in spring and summer shelter our grounds, has been a boon to those involved with spiritual learning and mindfulness training. It is also a good spot for those who are interested in more active pursuits as can be seen from the stack of stuff to listed on this site under the Activities tab. In this respect special mention must be made of the river Waveney which is so close and so very beautiful that is a must to explore either on foot, by canoe or on a horse.
I am heartened by the great feedback that we get from many of our guests, which we take as proof that we must be getting something right!
